Diet

  • Healthy foods are important for healthy teeth.
  • Eat a balanced diet every day. Choose from the 5 food groups everyday- cereals & bread, vegetables, fruits, dairy (milk, yoghurt, and cheese), meat, nuts, poultry & eggs.
  • Drink plenty of water. Replace sugary drinks (soft drinks, juices, etc.) with water. This helps with washing away the food debris and is also without any sugar.
  • Limit the amount of sugary foods and sweets. If sticky and sweet foods are eaten, the best time is at meal times rather than between meals.
  • Choose from fresh foods rather than processed foods. Limit the snack times as this leads to increased acidic levels in the mouth which causes damage to the enamel of the teeth.
  • Visit your dentist every 6 months to prevent problems from occurring and catching those that do occur while they are still easy to treat.

Fissure Sealants

A sealant is a protective coating placed in the grooves of back teeth present on biting surfaces. It is a painless and quick procedure which protects children’s teeth from decay. The coating forms a hard barrier that prevents food from getting caught n small grooves and pits in teeth thus preventing decay. Also, as the grooves become shallower it is easier for children to clean the teeth.

The dentist examines the teeth and assesses which teeth would need sealing. The adult molars and premolars are sealed. The sealants are most effective when teeth newly erupt.

The process to apply sealant is simple and quick. It takes only a few minutes per tooth. It is totally pain free. They last for many years. They can wear over time and may need replacement or addition and ensure that there is no decay beneath them.
